Johnson Youth Facilities, Juneau, Alaska.
BASICS: At the time of visit, the facilities were holding 18 kids - 2 or 3 in detention and the rest committed. All the committed kids are male. The facility has eight rooms, they don't call them cells. The space was an adult correction facility until 1984 when it was converted for juveniles. The staff refers to the juveniles being held as "residents." And the residents call the staff Ms. or Mr. Juveniles must leave upon their 19th birthdays. Most of the juveniles in the facility are status offenders, in for property crimes, substance abuse. Johnson has a two year maximum treatment, and residents are evaluated every month. Suicide is the number one concern.
