“It’s practically torture–and we’re doing it to kids.” The ACLU is not being dramatic when using the word torture. Solitary confinement can have horrific effects on the adolescent mind. Some facilities have practices of putting every incoming juvenile in solitary confinement for periods of 24-72 hours. Solitary confinement has been proven to have deleterious psychological effects on people of all ages, let alone children whose brains are not fully developed. The great majority of kids put in solitary confinement have pre-existing mental health issues; when our intention is to rehabilitate and reintegrate children into society, solitary confinement cannot be seen as a viable means of reaching our goals.
